I find it challenging to look back on my three months in Belize and not get jealous of my past self. After my incredible conversation with local writer Carolee Chanona, who spends all her free time looking for the most amazing adventures in her home country, I’ve been tapping into my sense memory of kayaking with manatees, snorkeling along the reef and hiking in the jungle.
This tiny Central American country’s size just adds to the fun. There are only four main highways through Belize, making it incredibly easy to navigate. The protected parks and conservation areas are well marked and well maintained so it's easy to plan your own incredible trip. But there are also extremely knowledgeable and well-trained guides available to push you and your knowledge just a little further.
The true magic is in the ever-changing landscape. You could do one dive or one hike or one river trip over and over and over and have a different experience each time. The wildlife changes, but so does the light, the weather, the flora, and they all work together to offer a new vista or a new sensation. Recently Carolee went swimming in bioluminescence in a lagoon a short boat ride from Hopkins in the southern part of the country. She said the experience was unlike anything she’d ever done, and she’s just buzzing to tell everyone about it. These are the kinds of surprises Belize has in store for you, too. Read on to hear about more of Carolee’s adventures.
