These activists’ job is beach
One of the more underrated travel storylines this summer, in my humble opinion, has been the local activists fighting for the common people. Enter this story out of Greece about a new campaign called the Towel Movement or Beach Towel Revolt.
The campaign aims to bring attention to the creep of private operators charging for chairs along the beach – sometimes upwards of €120 for VIP access (which apparently just meant a front-row chair) – often shutting out locals from accessing their beloved beaches.
There will always be a debate over beach (and pool) chair etiquette, but I feel it has hit a bit of a boiling point in recent years as more and more places, from the beaches of the Mediterranean to the pools of Las Vegas, have tried to add premium prices for the perfect spot.
