The direct flight from New York to Nairobi is 13 ½ hours. That means, as the person in charge of creating the video to show you what it is like to visit Nairobi, I had a long time to worry about all that was waiting for me on the other side of the world. It’s that exciting fire-in-the-stomach type of feeling you get before both a big trip and a big shoot, and with both on the schedule, I was amped.
Thankfully, local producer (and ultimate cool kid) Brian Msafiri and Lonely Planet’s Kenya guidebook writer Neema Githere were the best collaborators I could have hoped for. Together, we probed, dissected, unearthed and stitched together the tapestry of senses that make up Nairobi and aimed to distill them all down into one impactful video that could show travelers what it feels like to be here.
Over the course of one seriously frenetic week, we went from a safari to bass-thumping clubs and everywhere in between. The result? A mood board of a city that tops our Best In Travel list, new friends from across the world, and a return flight full of zzzs.

At just 117 sq km, Nairobi National Park is one of Africa’s smallest parks, but has abundant wildlife including lions and rhinos. Fenced on only three sides to allow natural migration, animals seem undisturbed by the skyscrapers in the background.

Karura Forest is beloved by locals as an escape to nature from the bustle of the city. The Sigiria entrance now has a sweet little cafe, children's obstacle course, bike rental and yoga platform.
Locals know Cultiva for its ambience and organic, homegrown ingredients, with a wide range of amazing dishes and cocktails to sample. The port tacos come highly recommended!
