View in browser PICTURE YOURSELF IN… Bhutan Imagine hiking to Tiger’s Nest Every time I spot a picture of Bhutan’s famed Tiger’s Nest, I imagine what it would be like to trek through the country known for its Gross Domestic Happiness Index* (GDH).  I’ve followed the reopening of the Trans Bhutan Trail with great interest. As someone who enjoys a good thru-hike, I was thrilled when the inclusion of Bhutan in our 2023 Best in Travel gave me the opportunity to connect with Galey Tenzin, one of the guides leading treks along the ancient trail.  Galey leads tours in both English and German. But, your memories of this magical place will be priceless. A memorable arrival into Bhutan. As you descend over the Himalayas into the airport, you’ll enjoy one of the most scenic flights (and hair-raising landings!) you’ve ever experienced. Light a butter lamp at Paro Dzong. Lighting a traditional Buddhist temple butter lamp (these burn on yak butter) at the majestic Paro Dzong is said to bring success and safety to the journey ahead.  See the famous Buddha statue in Thimphu Valley. This section of the trail will end near this gigantic monument, and you won’t want to miss out on a photo opp in front of it.  Pause to take it all in at Dochula Pass. Colorful prayer flags line the road, with amazing, panoramic views of the snow-covered Himalayas forming a majestic backdrop against 108 chortens (Buddhist shrines). Hike to Tiger’s Nest. Built on a cliff some 9840ft (3000m) above sea level, this extraordinary monastery is one of the most memorable holy sites in the world. TRANS BHUTAN TRAIL Historically a pilgrimage route, the fully restored Trans Bhutan Trail reopened to visitors in September 2022. Its 250 miles of scenic footpath will offer visitors a unique perspective of the Asian country and likely will become one of the world’s most iconic cross-country walks. Read More Ask an Insider Walking the entire trek across Bhutan takes a serious commitment in of both time and money. Here are Galey’s tips for planning a shorter stay. The trail opened this past fall. How has it been going so far? The trail is well maintained, and international tourists and locals have already started using it. But some parts of the trails are under maintenance, mostly in the eastern part of Bhutan.   Which sections would you recommend to someone who doesn’t have time to do the full trail?  I would recommend western part as it’s near the international airport, which means you’ll spend less time traveling. The specific trail sections I would recommend are: – Lamgong to Dopshari Paro – 16km / 8 hours – Dopshari Paro to Tshaluna Thimphu – 14.2 km / 6 hours – Tsaluna Thimphu to Dordenma Thimphu – 14.2 km / 6 hours What is your favorite part of the trail?  Every section of the trail has its own beauty. My favorite part of the trail is from Pele La pass to Chendebji (19km). You can experience  extraordinary views on this beautiful trail in Sephu, Wangdue. I recommend red rice with ema datsi (chili with cheese) and suja (butter tea with zaw rice). Is there a special souvenir people should bring home from their visit?  Bhutan is famous for its textiles.
